Every day, across cities, towns, and remote communities, women put on the uniform and step into roles that demand courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.
- They are police officers responding to calls in the middle of the night.
- They are paramedics and EMS professionals rushing to save lives.
- They are firefighters entering burning buildings.
- They are search and rescue teams navigating dangerous terrain.
- They are soldiers standing watch far from home.
And while their numbers continue to grow, women in uniform still represent a powerful part of the first responder community.
In North America, women make up around 12–14 percent of sworn police officers, roughly 21–35 percent of EMS personnel, and about 7–9 percent of firefighters, depending on the region and department.
In Canada specifically, women represent about 23 percent of police officers, 36 percent of paramedics, and 3 percent of career firefighters, highlighting both progress and the barriers that still exist.
Across the broader public safety workforce globally, women remain underrepresented in many operational roles, yet their presence continues to rise as more young women step forward to serve their communities.
Behind every statistic is a story.
A firefighter carrying someone to safety. A paramedic holding a patient’s hand in the back of an ambulance. A police officer comforting a victim after a traumatic call. A search and rescue volunteer refusing to give up until someone is found.
These moments rarely make headlines, but they change lives.
As we approach International Women’s Day, we recognize the women who choose careers defined by service, sacrifice, and courage. Many of them work long shifts, face physical danger, and carry emotional burdens that most people will never see.
They do it anyway.
To every woman serving as a first responder, whether in policing, EMS, firefighting, search and rescue, the military, or emergency communications, thank you. Your leadership, strength, and compassion make our communities safer and stronger.
We celebrate you, and the next generation of women who will follow in your footsteps.
